Sgraffito
Start with a big piece of clay, and make it into a perfect circle by throwing it back and forth between your hands. Pound it with your fist, and make it into a patty. Roll it through the slab roller. Next, smooth your slap with a rib, and get rid of any air bubbles. Put it on the plate mold of your choice, and cut the excess off. Let your new plate dry until it is leather hard, and then paint it with the black paint. Pick an image that is half black and half white, and trace it using the tracing paper. Once you're done tracing, fit the image to your plate and go over the lines with a pen. Your tracing should transfer onto the plate. Use carving tools to carve away the lines, and expose the image. Optionally, you can use under glaze to add accents of color to your piece. Finally, bisque and clear glaze your plate. To make a successful sgraffito plate, you must have half black and half white, and neat and clear cut lines. You also need to make your plate even, and not too thin around the edges.
I chose this image, because I have really been into sugar skulls lately, and I think they are so pretty. They are also very elaborate and have a complex design, and I really wanted to test my skills and challenge myself. I think I did a pretty good job!
